Dental Services from a Team that Cares

Routine Dental Cleaning

It is suggested that patients should be seen for a dental cleaning and routine exam every six months or as recommended by Dr. Bartlett. Plaque and calculus will be removed from your teeth during the cleaning, leaving behind a bright and polished smile. X-rays may need to be taken to help detect possible cavities in between teeth that the naked eye cannot see.

Teeth Whitening

Do you wish you had a brighter, more radiant smile? Then professional teeth whitening may be right for you! Teeth whitening can remove certain stains from

  • Tea, coffee, wine, and soda
  • Certain medications
  • The natural aging process
  • Tobacco use
  • Fluorosis

Soon after starting treatment at our office for teeth whitening, you will start to see a whiter, brighter smile. Schedule an appointment for a consultation with our doctors to see if you’re a candidate for teeth whitening!

Digital X-Rays

Dental x-rays are a great preventative, diagnostic tool that provides important information not visible during a regular dental exam. Our dental team will utilize this important information to safely and accurately detect any dental abnormalities and then create an accurate treatment plan.

Crowns & Bridges

Crowns are necessary when a tooth is severely damaged or has suffered from advanced decay and cannot be fixed with a bonded filling material. Crowns cover the remaining tooth and restore its function, strength, and esthetics. Several crown material options are available, and our doctors will discuss these individually depending on the area of the mouth that needs to be restored.

Bridges can be utilized when tooth loss occurs due to gum disease, decay, or injury. The loss of the tooth can create greater problems for your dental health if it is not corrected. The teeth next to the missing tooth (or teeth) can begin to move and result in pain, discomfort, and look unsightly. With bridges, our doctors will close any gaps in your mouth. The bridge looks and acts just like natural teeth are permanently cemented and helps maintain the rest of your teeth.

TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular Disorder is fairly common in the population, and symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Clicking/popping/grating sound from either joint
  • Ringing or fullness in either ear
  • Sore facial, chewing, or neck muscles
  • Headaches of unknown
  • Difficulty staying asleep at night
  • Grinding of teeth during the day and/or at night time

Our doctors will evaluate your condition using a physical examination, radiographs and/or diagnostic models of your teeth.

Treatment may include:

  • Occlusal (bite) Splint Therapy
Selective bite adjustment (even out tooth contacts)
  • Restoration of teeth to adjust or support bite
  • Replacement of missing teeth to adjust or support bite

Implant Restoration

When it comes to the restoration of implants, our team is the one to trust to get the job done right and help maintain your beautiful smile. At Smiles By Design, we specialize in implant restoration, which allows us to restore your old implants and make them look new again. Your dental implant will look and act just like a natural tooth once again.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great alternative to traditional bridgework, and dentures. They are safe and look and feel just like natural teeth. Implants are permanently anchored into the patient’s jawbone, and no preparation of adjacent teeth is required.

It is essential to replace missing teeth because if left with spaces, your teeth can shift and cause various other dental and medical problems. Dr. Bartlett has extensive experience in treatment planning and designing implant solutions custom-tailored for each patient. When your dental implants are placed, your jaw will bond and attach to the implant, making them very strong and functional. All surgical implant services are completed in-house, so our patients don’t have to rush around to a specialist’s office.

What are the benefits of implant dentistry?

Dental implants offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Allows you to keep the rest of your teeth healthy.
  • Dental implants help prevent the deterioration of your jawbone, keep your face structure in place, and keep your still existing teeth from shifting.
  • Helps to maintain anatomy.
  • When you have missing teeth, you run the risk of the bones in your face shrinking.
  • Bone loss can lead to your jawline receding and changes in your facial structure.
  • Security.
  • Expertly placed dental implants will not move around, which means most denture problems are eliminated.

Dentures

Complete dentures are used to replace a person’s teeth when they are all missing. Removable dentures are designed to restore your smile’s health, function, and beauty. They are crafted to fit your mouth comfortably and snugly. When in place, dentures can:

  • Help restore your ability to eat and speak
  • Replace your missing teeth
  • Prevent facial sagging
  • Improve the appearance of your smile

Your dentures will be made to look and feel like natural teeth so that you can feel confident every time you smile. We invite you to call our office today if you are missing teeth to learn more about the benefits of dentures.

Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can be very frightening and often painful. Prompt treatment is generally required to alleviate pain and ensure the patient’s oral and overall health. If you’re dealing with a dental emergency, call us immediately at 409-727-2164, and we will schedule you in as soon as possible. Should you call after hours, call our regular number, and our voicemail will inform you of how to get in touch with us.

Endodontic Therapy (Root Canals)

Root canal therapy is needed when a cavity has reached the pulp of a tooth, causing an infection of the nerve, or when severe trauma has affected the tooth. Regular checkups with your dentist help avoid and prevent the need for endodontic therapy. But once the pulp has become infected, it must be treated to avoid further issues since it cannot heal itself. Some signs that a pulp is infected include sensitivity to hot or cold foods or liquids, pain, swelling, or even a bad taste in the mouth. For some patients, no symptoms are obvious, and they are unaware a problem exists until their dentist sees them for an exam.

When endodontic therapy is performed, your dentist will clean out the infected pulp and disinfect the tooth’s canals. Once the area has been disinfected, the tooth’s canals are filled with a special material to prevent further infections and help heal the tooth. Sometimes a core build-up, bonded post, and crown are necessary for restoring a tooth to function.

Invisalign®

Invisalign aligners are the clear alternative to metal braces for adults and adolescents. We use a series of custom fabricated trays to straighten the teeth. No one will know that you are wearing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept my insurance? What payment options are available?

Smiles By Design accepts all types of insurance, however we are not a “preferred provider” for any insurance companies. We have insurance specialists in office that would be happy to review your coverage and file claims for treatment on your behalf. Our office participates in CareCredit. If needed, an application can be filled following your appointment in-office.

What new technology is being used in office?

In our office we make every effort to stay up to date with new technology and changes in the dental profession. We are proud to offer our patients digital x-rays with every cleaning and comprehensive exam.

We also have a Cone Beam Computed Tomography system (CBCT). This allows our doctors to view the oral cavity in 3D to aid in earlier diagnosis of tooth infections, visualization of impacted wisdom teeth, and comprehensive evaluation of dental bone levels for implant placement.

In 2021, we purchased a dental laser. This tool aids our doctors in treatment of periodontal disease, cosmetic gingival procedures, biopsies, and allows select fillings to be completed without the need for anesthesia.

Our latest technology investment was an intra oral scanner. This allows our doctors to complete crowns, bridges and implant restorations without the need for a traditional impression. Impressions can often cause patients to gag and feel discomfort. This new tool sends our dental labs exact scans of the
patient’s oral cavity without the discomfort.

What is the difference between a regular and deep cleaning?

A “regular” cleaning is recommended for all patients every 6 months. At this appointment, X-rays may be updated, your teeth will be cleaned by our dental hygienists, and the dentist will provide a full exam to check for any cavities or other oral conditions.

A deep cleaning is scheduled for patients that have Periodontal disease. Periodontal disease leads to heavy plaque and calculus (calcified plaque) build-up beneath the gum tissue. If not removed, bone loss can occur around teeth, leading to mobility and potential tooth loss. At a deep cleaning appointment, you will receive anesthesia for comfort, and all plaque and calculus existing beneath the gum line will be
removed. In some cases, we will use our dental laser to sterilize deep gum pockets to promote healing.

What is an implant? Can I have implants placed at this office?

An implant is a Titanium post that is placed within bone in a space where a tooth is missing. The post then integrates within your natural bone – giving it strength and rigidity. At Smiles By Design, we can restore a single tooth or a full arch with dental implants. All work can be done at our office- from bone grafting and implant placement to restoration.

Does this office treat children or only adults?

Both Dr. Bartlett and Dr. Fuston are happy to see your whole family! We like to establish a dental home for children as early as possible to help them feel comfortable coming to the dentist and practice prevention. As soon as the first baby tooth erupts in a child’s mouth, they are welcome for their first visit. Both Dr. Bartlett and Dr. Fuston provide dental treatments such as; fillings, baby root canals and crowns, space maintainers, and extractions for children. We encourage children to maintain a 6 month visit schedule to have their teeth cleaned and fluoride applied to the teeth.

What if I am nervous for my appointment?

Dental anxiety is very common. Dr. Bartlett and Dr. Fuston are both committed to making your
experience comfortable and free of stress. Both doctors are Nitrous Oxide certified (laughing gas) and able to provide you with this extra comfort during dental procedures.

Does your office offer teeth whitening?

Smiles By Design utilizes the KOR whitening system. For patients interested in whitening their teeth, custom whitening trays will be made. We then offer both at-home and in-office bleaching – depending on the patient’s unique needs.

Does your office offer braces or clear aligner therapy?

Traditional bracket and wire braces are not performed in our office. However, both of our doctors are Invisalign certified. We offer clear aligner therapy to adult patients meeting our treatment requirements.

What technologies do you use in your practice for diagnostics and treatment?

Our office strives to stay up to date on new research and technologies. We utilize Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT scanner) in our office to aid in diagnosing. This 3D scanner allows us to evaluate bone levels for implant placement and diagnose dental infections at a much earlier stage than traditional radiographs (X-rays).

Smiles by Design recently switched to digital dentistry. This means that we are scanning and 3D designing our dental crowns and dentures instead of taking traditional “putty” impressions.

In addition, our office utilizes a dental laser to aid in periodontal therapy and TMJ disorders.

Do you accept dental insurance and which providers do you work with?

Smiles by Design accepts all dental insurance plans but is not “in-network” with any companies. Our office team is happy to file claims to your insurance on your behalf. Prior to dental work, we will present you with a treatment plan that includes projected coverage by your insurance and any “out of pocket” expenses.

What types of preventive dental care do you provide for both children and adults?

Preventive treatment is very important to us at Smiles by Design. We encourage adults and children (age 12 months and up) to see the dentist every 6 months. Biannual visits allow us to professionally clean your teeth and to update X-rays to check for decay and other dental issues. For children, we recommend fluoride varnish during their check-ups to help protect their teeth from decay. Once a child’s permanent teeth erupt, we can place sealants on permanent teeth to block out the chewing surface from getting cavities.

For adults, one preventive service that we recommend is a nocturnal orthotic or “nightguard” for our patients that struggle with clenching and grinding their teeth at night.

Can you describe your approach to pediatric dentistry and what makes it child-friendly?

Both Dr. Bartlett and Dr. Fuston are happy to treat all members of your family- even the little ones! Both of our doctors are parents themselves and know how important it is to establish a “Dental home”. Our goal is to avoid childhood fears of the dentist that carry into adulthood. We practice the “tell- show- do” method. We take time to explain or “tell” your child what will happen at their appointment. We then “show” our instruments to the child and allow them to hold and touch them to see that they are not scary. Finally, we “do” the treatment.

Both doctors are certified to administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if the child requires extra help during the appointment.

Are there financing options or payment plans available for dental procedures?

Our excellent office manager, Kim Soto, will be able to assist you with any questions regarding payment plans in our office. Patients can pick up an application for CareCredit before leaving their appointment, if needed.

What is your approach to handling dental emergencies and after-hours care?

Dental emergencies are very important to us. Please contact our front office immediately if you are experiencing swelling or pain with a tooth. We do our best to see all emergency patients on the same day.

If an emergency arises after hours, we have an emergency number where you can leave a voicemail for one of our doctors to call you back.

What should I expect during my first dental visit with you?

Your first dental visit is all about getting to know each other and your unique dental needs. We will take X-rays and examine your mouth to develop a comprehensive treatment plan together.

For dental care that you can trust and rely on for the entire family, call us at 409-727-2164 today.

We look forward to the opportunity to assist you with all of your dental needs!
